I am writing to urge you to support ending aerial spraying of chemical herbicides in British Columbia’s public forests. This request is based on unacceptable risk, not ideology. Health Canada repeatedly states that pesticides are permitted only when they pose “no unacceptable risks” to human health or the environment. That claim is no longer credible for forest herbicide spraying. British Columbia’s forests naturally regenerate after logging into diverse ecosystems rich with fireweed, aspen, birch, willow, and other broadleaf plants that are critical for moose, bees, birds, and countless other species. The forestry industry instead sprays chemical herbicides to kill this regeneration and force conifer-only plantations. This practice destroys wildlife habitat, contaminates waterways and food sources, threatens drinking water, and exposes rural and Indigenous communities to chemical drift and runoff. These risks are borne by communities that never consented to being sprayed. Claims that glyphosate-based forest herbicides are safe rely on key scientific papers that have now been formally retracted due to serious ethical concerns and undisclosed corporate involvement. When the science used to justify “acceptable risk” collapses, continued spraying becomes indefensible. British Columbia already recognizes that certain pesticide risks are unacceptable. Cosmetic pesticide bans were adopted to protect children and families. Children in rural and Indigenous communities deserve the same protection as those in cities. Beyond health and ecological harm, forest herbicide spraying raises serious Indigenous rights concerns. Spraying contaminates traditional foods, medicines, and watersheds, undermining Indigenous sovereignty and reconciliation. Proven alternatives exist. Quebec ended forest herbicide spraying in 2001 and maintains a strong forest sector using chemical-free practices such as manual tending, earlier replanting, and stronger seedlings, while creating local jobs. I have two questions: 1) Will you publicly support ending chemical herbicide spraying in British Columbia’s public forests due to unacceptable risk? 2) Will you work within your party to make ending forest herbicide spraying a legislative priority? British Columbians deserve leadership that protects forests, water, wildlife, and communities from unacceptable harm. I look forward to your response.Submit Email - Please double-check your information before submitting to ensure your email is validPlease do not fill in this field. EMAIL YOUR MP
