Dear MLA,

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to end aerial and ground spraying of all Chemical herbicides in Nova Scotia’s forests.

These chemicals are used to kill native hardwood regrowth after clearcutting – an outdated and harmful practice that prioritizes corporate profit over public and ecological health.

This approach is not only dangerous, it is negligent. Forestry companies choose spraying because it is cheaper than hiring workers to manually tend forests. The cost to public health, drinking water, wildlife, and long-term forest resilience is far too high.

There is no ethical justification left for continuing to spray these chemicals over Nova Scotia’s forests. In December 2025, a widely cited glyphosate safety review was retracted after serious ethical concerns and evidence of ghostwriting linked to the manufacturer came to light. In March 2026, the Seattle Statement on Glyphosate and Public Health concluded that glyphosate-based herbicides harm human health, can cause cancer, and are linked to impacts on the reproductive, endocrine, neurological, and other metabolic systems. Nova Scotia cannot ignore this and continue exposing forests, waterways, wildlife, and communities to these chemicals.

Herbicide spraying violates the principles of responsible forestry and disregards the health of communities and ecosystems, especially in Mi’kma’ki, where citizens put their bodies on the line at “Don’t Spray Us” camps to prevent spraying near Otter Brook and Halfway Brook.

The 1999 Federal Senate report called for an end to chemical herbicides in forestry, and Quebec proved it could be done by ending herbicide spraying in 2001 and moving to more responsible forest management. Nova Scotia should do the same.

This is about our shared future. In the face of the biodiversity and climate crises, we must protect forests – not poison them.

I urge you and your colleagues to:

End all approvals for herbicide spraying in Nova Scotia.

Support sustainable forestry practices that create jobs and protect biodiversity.

Respect the rights of communities standing up for a healthier, chemical-free future.
