Subject: Request to Bring Filed Forest Herbicide Resolutions Forward for Discussion

Dear Mayor and Members of Council,

I understand our municipality has received and filed one or more resolutions from Ontario municipalities opposing non-essential chemical herbicide spraying in public forests. I respectfully request that Council bring these resolutions forward for discussion and a recorded vote, so that our municipality’s position is clearly placed on the public record.

Forest herbicide spraying affects shared land, water, wildlife, and community health. Indigenous Nations have opposed this practice since the 1980s, and 60 Ontario municipalities have now passed or supported "Stop the Spray" resolutions calling for an end to forest herbicide use. Quebec’s people won this protection when Quebec banned forest spraying in 2001; it is time for Ontario to protect its residents and the environment as well. Recent retractions of key scientific papers used to defend glyphosate’s safety make it especially urgent for Council to take a clear, public position.
